The economic impact of golf in Spain reaches 15,397 million euros, according to a study carried out by IE University. This and other economic data from the study show the significant positive impact that golf generates in its respective territories, both in economic activity, as well as in quality tourist movement and in employment.
Spain is the main European country receiving golf tourists. It attracts 42% of this segment, well above the following destinations (Ireland, France and Portugal), which are around 25%. Of the 15,397 million euros generated in economic impact by golf as a whole in Spain, 5,872 correspond to tourists from this activity, according to the study. This is an upward trend, as it represents 27.6% more than in 2019.
In this sense, golf is a crucial element in the de-seasonalisation of tourism: in 2022 (still under the impact of Covid-19), golf generated 132,994 jobs, 9.6% more than in 2018.
A particularly relevant fact from the study is that of the 15,397 million euros generated by golf, 11% are for the activity itself, while the remaining 89% have an impact on the economy of the territory (tourism, hospitality, services, real estate, etc.).
The IE University study was carried out within the framework of the Digital Green Spain project: Digital transformation and local integration of the golf experience in Spain, promoted by the Spanish Association of Golf Courses and the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, financed with Next Generation funds granted by the Secretary of State for Tourism of the Government of Spain.
